No Summary A summary of the contents of the recording/transcript On Side One, Jim Waggott [JW] tells his story of being captured by a German ship in 1940. On 30 November 1940, Waggott’s ship was destroyed by a German ship and the two lifeboats of men who managed to escape were later found by German raiders. JW describes life on the ship with other prisoners in great detail, including details on what the accommodation and food were like on board. JW then tells about being taken to a German camp in Bordeaux. After six weeks, JW and the other sailors were sent on cattle trains to Stalag XB Sandbostel camp in Germany. JW describes the work, food, and people in the camp, as well as a typhus epidemic that went around the camp. Eighteen months later, after neutral American and Swiss Red Cross workers saw the conditions of the camp, they were moved to Marlag und Milag Nord camp. JW tells about John Worsley and the making of ‘Albert RN’ and the many escape attempts made my prisoners at the camp, including the successful escape of David ‘Dicky’ James. Side Two begins with Jim Waggott [JW] talking about life inside the camps. JW describes how prisoners made radios with crystals and coils they found. ED’s career began at age fifteen as a cabin boy on the British ship Runa, where he earned £4 per month. ED describes the various tasks he had on the ship, such as making and delivering tea, preparing for breakfast, washing dishes, and cleaning the ship. ED talks about working primarily on Norwegian ships, and discusses the difference between Norwegian and British ships. She met her husband in Oslo while he was there during the war, and after knowing each other for four months, they were married and Evans moved back to Cardiff to live with his family. No Summary A summary of the contents of the recording/transcript Osmond John Brahim [OJB] describes his experiences as a seaman from 1949 to 1966, moving up through the ranks from deckhand to bosun. He speaks in detail about positions on the ship such as deck boy, able-bodied seaman, bosun, chief officer, chief engineer, chief cook, and chief steward and the specific tasks they were responsible for. OJB describes the hierarchy of command on the ships, work done in the engine room and provides an overview of the food served on different ships. Beginning at 21:45, he lists many of the places he travelled to such as Australia, Brazil, the Suez Canal, Sudan, and Switzerland. Two female speakers, one of whom is assumed to be the speaker’s wife, enter the conversation and a discussion begins about other seamen that Brahim knew who are still living in the Cardiff area. They discuss the interviewee’s father, who was born in 1894. They speak fondly of a man named Amazir, with one of the female voices saying ‘Everyone knows Amazir’ [31:10]. They also discuss Hagi Harris, Crazy Sally (Dr. Sally), Albert Michael, Jeffrey Kelly, Ozzie Abrams, and Dr. Jackson.
