Bute Street was the main thoroughfare linking the city centre to the docks. The tram is headed to Pierhead

The street was a profusion of shops, public houses and boarding houses. There were also sailors' rests - the Chinese Seamens Home is in the THEN picture. The shops with awning are both Outfitters - H Berman & Co. and Jan Dirk Zussen.

The towers of St Mary's Church can be seen in both pictures
